The 2019 world champion and world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech won the 3,000m steeplechase gold at the African Games in Ghana. The Kenyan long-distance runner, who is 2018 African champion, clocked a new games record of 9:15.61 min.
Peruth Chemutai (Uganda) earned the silver with 9:16.07 min, while the bronze went to Lomi Muleta Tefera (Ethiopia) with 9:26.63 min.
The Top 5 was completed by two Ethiopian runners Weweltejilteji Sembo Almayew and Firehiwot Gesese Ayana.
Beatrice Chepkoech won gold medals at the 2019 World Championships and 2018 African Championships and silver medal at the 2023 World Championships. In the 1,500m, she took silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 2015 African Games. She is the world record holder for the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:44.32 set in 2018 in Monaco. With that mark she became the first woman to break the 8:50 and 8:45 barriers in the event. Beatrice Chepkoech is a two-time 3,000m steeplechase Diamond League champion and won two Kenyan national titles.
Earlier, EMILY Ngii Emily (Kenya) won the gold in women’s 20km walk with 1:37:34 hours. The silver went to Teshager Sintayehu Masirie (Ethiopia) and the bronze was for Azzi Souad (Algeria).
The South African athlete dominated the women’s Javelin Throw after Jo-ane van Dyk won the gold and Jana van Schalkwyk earned the silver. Jo-ane van Dyk improved the games record with her 60.80, while Jana van Schalkwyk reached 57.64m. The bronze was for Josephine Joyce Lalam with a national record of 57.01m.
