World championships silver and bronze medalist in the 5,000m Beatrice Chebet won the Olympic title in the event. The 24-year-old Kenyan athlete overtook her compatriot and reigning world champion Faith Kipyegon and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Sifan Hassan in the battle for top spot after winning the race in Paris in 14:28.56 min.
Beatrice Chebet attacked her compatriot Faith Kipyegon in the last meters and managed to overtake her. In the end, Faith Kipyegon finished second with 14:29.60 min. However, she was eventually disqualified for colliding with Gudaf Tsegay (Ethiopia).
Thus, the champion from Tokyo Sifan Hassan remained with the silver medal with 14:30.61 min. The Dutchwoman will start in Paris in two more disciplines – 10,000m and marathon.
The lucky winner of Faith Kipyegon’s disqualification was Rome 2024 European champion Nadia Battocletti (Italy), who earned bronze in Italy’s national record of 14:31.64 min.
