The world’s number one female tennis double Barbora Krejcikova / Katerina Siniakova will play for their fourth Grand Slam title after qualifying for the final of the Australian Open. The Czechs, who reached the same stage in Melbourne last year, beat the third-seeded Veronika Kudermetova (Russia) / Elise Mertens (Belgium) with 2-0 (6:2, 6:3) in 74 minutes.
In 2021, Elise Mertens won the doubles title in Melbourne partnering with Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus).
In the battle for the trophy, Barbora Krejcikova / Katerina Siniakova will play against Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil) / Anna Danilina (Kazakhstan), who eliminated the second-seeded Japanese Shuko Aoyama / Ena Shibahara with 2-1 (6:4, 5:7, 6:4) for 2 hours and 21 minutes.
The Czechs hope to get one step closer to their dream of a career Grand Slam in women’s doubles. The duo won two Roland Garros titles in 2018 and 2021, as well as the Wimbledon title in 2018. But the “majors” on hard surfaces – the Australian Open and the US Open, are missing from their collection.
“We went through a lot of tough matches on the way to the final, so I can say on behalf of both of us that we are really proud and looking forward to the battle for the title”, said Barbora Krejcikova after winning the semifinals.
The women’s doubles Barbora Krejcikova / Katerina Siniakova are also Olympics champions from Tokyo 2020.
