Athing Mu won the world title at the 800m

Athing Mu is only 20 years old, but she is already an Olympic and world champion in the 800m. The American repeated her success from Tokyo 2020 Olympics and triumphed in front of a home crowd in Eugene with a world best result of the season of 1:56.30 min.

Another 20-year-old talent, Olympic silver medalist Keely Hodgkinson (Great Britain) gave her best and came very close to Athing Mu after a strong attack in the final meters but eventually finished second again in 1:56.38 min.

The Kenyan Mary Moraa won the bronze medal with a personal record of 1:56.71 min.

Athing Mu is an American middle-distance runner. At the age of 19, she won a gold medal in the 800m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, breaking a national record set by Ajee Wilson in 2017, and a continental under-20 record. She took a second gold medal as part of the 4×400m relay. She set the world under-20 record in the women’s indoor 800m in early 2021. Athing Mu also holds the world under-20 best in the indoor 600m, set in 2019 when she was 16 years of age. Her time of 1:23.57 min is the second fastest ever run indoors and the second fastest run by an American woman in any condition.
