The WTA world’s number one Ashleigh Barty said that 2021 was a year of impressive breakthroughs and showed how much talent there is in women’s tennis, which is good for the sport. The Grand Slam titles were won by various athletes for the fifth year in a row. There were new champions in the Year-End Championships of the Women’s Tennis Association, as well as at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“Every year there are new contenders, regardless of the positions in the rankings”, commented Ashleigh Barty on the eve of her participation in the preparatory tournament in Adelaide before the Australian Open.
“The girls really took a step forward, they were consistent throughout the season, and it’s very nice to see women’s tennis”, added the 25-year-old Australian tennis player.
“There is a lot of competition and you have to show your best every time to be able to compete with everyone and have a chance for the big trophies”, said Ashleigh Barty.
The tennis player stressed the importance of the preparatory competitions for her at the beginning of the season.
“You have to be able to enjoy and get in a rhythm in the first few weeks because you can’t always show your best tennis from the start. I can’t wait for the first few games and I’m glad to be on the court again”, said Ashleigh Barty.
Ashleigh Barty is an Australian professional tennis player and former cricketer. She is ranked No. 1 in the world in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association and is the second Australian WTA singles No 1 after fellow Indigenous Australian player Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
