Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) qualified for the third round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open after a straight-set victory versus Sorana Cirstea (Romania). The Belarusian player needed less than an hour and a half to defeat the Romanian by 2-0 (6:4, 6:3).
Aryna Sabalenka did not spend a lot of effort and power in the first set, realizing just one break more than Sorana Cirstea. In the second set, however, she turned to be more aggressive and succeeded to lose the set after 3 breaks by 6:3.
In the next round, Aryna Sabalenka will face Camila Osorio (Colombia), who brought one of the surprises of the day after defeating Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine).
The 14th-seeded Liudmila Samsonova (Russia) did not faced problems against Maryna Zanevska (Belgium) and won by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3), while Elise Mertens (Belgium) smashed Rebecca Marino (Canada) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1) and also advanced to the third round of the Masters’ tournament.
The 5th-seeded Caroline Garcia (France) defeated Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4) and in the next round will face Mayar Sherif (Egypt), who defeated Anhelina Kalinina (Ukraine) by 2-0 (6:2, 7:6).
The 17th-seeded Magda Linette (Poland) defeated Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) by 2-1 (7:6, 4:6, 6:4).
Irina-Camelia Begu (Romania) also advanced to the third round after a win versus Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic) by 2-0 (6:4, 7:5) and will face Shelby Rogers (USA), who eliminated Ana Bogdan (Romania) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:2).
