The champion of last year’s Australian Open, Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus), qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament. The world’s number two smashed Amanda Anisimova (USA) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2). The match at “Margaret Court Arena” lasted a little more than an hour.
Aryna Sabalenka has not lost a set since the start of the competition and has given a total of 11 games to her opponents in the four matches so far. After the elimination of Iga Swiatek yesterday, the tennis player from Belarus is the big favorite for the title. If she triumphs again this year, she will become the first woman to win the Australian Open in two consecutive years since her compatriot Victoria Azarenka did it in 2012 and 2013.
Amanda Anisimova is one of Aryna Sabalenka’s awkward opponents and has a positive balance against her, but today there was no answer to the power of the Belarusian tennis player. In the first set, the match was briefly interrupted by rain, but the organizers lowered the roof over the court and the match continued. Aryna Sabalenka broke even in the second game and easily won the set in 36 minutes.
The second set was again strongly dictated by the Belarusian player. Amanda Anisimova‘s unforced errors led to an early break, after which there was practically no intrigue. In the course of the match, she received only one opportunity to break Aryna Sabalenka’s serve, but she did not use it.
“I am very happy with the level I showed. I enjoy the atmosphere and I hope to have stayed in the tournament until the last day”, said Aryna Sabalenka after the victory.
She will be face Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) in her sixth straight Grand Slam quarterfinal. The Czech tennis player eliminated Russian tennis talent Mirra Andreeva after 2-1 (4:6, 6:3, 6:2).
