Former world number one Angelique Kerber plans to return to tennis at next year’s US Open at the latest after giving birth to her first child.
The three-time Grand Slam champion has not played since the summer due to her pregnancy. The baby is due in March and the 34-year-old German told that she is planning a comeback, but is not in rush.
“I believe I’ll be back towards the end of next year. Rather in New York than at Wimbledon. But if it works out for Wimbledon, I’d be happy to take it”, said Angelique Kerber. “I will take my time because when I come back, I want to do it right. I will play from the beginning and I will not participate in tournaments just for training purposes”, added the German tennis player.
Wimbledon, where she won the title in 2018, begins on July 3, and the US Open, where she lifted the trophy in 2016, is almost two months later on August 28.
Rio 2016 Olympics silver medalist Angelique Kerber said in the past that she wants to play at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The German said she would take her child with her when she starts traveling again to tennis tournaments, adding: “I won’t leave the child at home. She will definitely have a babysitter”.
Angelique Kerber said she was doing well during her pregnancy, staying in shape by swimming, cycling and other sports and had taken up yoga. She also plays tennis, but only with the kids at her academy.
“I don’t want to give up training completely. Now I have more time and I can enjoy everything, take a more relaxed approach”, said also Angelique Kerber.
