Anett Kontaveit will retire after Wimbledon

The Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit has announced that she will end her competitive career due to a degenerative back injury. The 27-year-old tennis player, who last year reached world’s No 2, will participate in Wimbledon, which will be the last tournament of her career. The Estonian has been plagued by back pain since at least October last year and has hardly played in tournaments for the past eight months.

“After several consultations with doctors and with my medical team, I was informed that I have degeneration of the lumbar disc. Such an injury does not allow full training and I cannot compete with it. Therefore, to continue playing tennis at the highest level for it’s impossible for me. I’m ready for new challenges after my last appearance as a professional competitor, which will be at “Wimbledon”, said Anett Kontaveit.

Anett Kontaveit is currently world’s No 75. She was knocked out in the second round of this year’s Australian Open, as well as in the first round of Roland Garros. Anett Kontaveit has won six WTA titles in her career, and her best Grand Slam finish is a quarterfinal in Melbourne in 2020.

Anett Kontaveit achieved her best singles ranking of No 2 on June 6, 2022, becoming the highest-ranked Estonian singles player of all time. She qualified for the 2021 WTA Finals and became the first Estonian to participate in the year-end tournament and reach the final.
