The former top 10 tennis player Andrea Petkovic is concerned about the lack of young sports talents in Germany.
In a press conference during Wimbledon, where she was invited to participate in the tournament of legends, the German said that “there are still fantastic talents, but they are much less” than in the past.
“In my generation, we were 10, 12 or 15 kids, then four or five turned out to be really good”, commented Andrea Petkovic, adding that she wasn’t sure why.
Andrea Petkovic, who retired last year, will play in the tournament together with Julia Gorges and former world number one Angelique Kerber, who plans to return next year after giving birth.
Now Andrea Petkovic works as a mentor for the German Tennis Federation. She revealed that the pressure on talent is now greater because they are fewer in number.
Among them is 23-year-old Jule Niemeier. The German reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2022 in her debut season but has struggled this year and is already outside the Top 100 in the WTA rankings.
