Croatian-born Australian professional tennis player Ajla Tomljanovic is the last to find a place in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Tonight, the Australian eliminated the last remaining representative of the hosts in the tournament, Emma Raducanu, after the 18-year-old Englishwoman suffered an injury and gave up in the middle of the second set.
In fact, Ajla Tomljanovic would probably have won the match anyway. The first set was quite contested, but the 28-year-old Australian took a lead after a break at the very end for 6:4.
At the beginning of the second set, it seems that Emma Raducanu has already started to feel pain and this affected her game, as she lost the first three games. At that moment, the Englishwoman requested a medical timeout and returned to the locker room. A few minutes later, the chair judge announced that Emma Raducanu was giving up and the match would not be over.
Thus, Ajla Tomljanovic will play for the first time in her career in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. There, however, she will meet the world No 1 Ashley Barty in an all-Australian clash.
