The 3rd-seeded Cori Coco Gauff won the title at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington with a prize pool of 780,637 USD. The American tennis talent defeated the 4th-seeded Maria Sakkari (Greece) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3) in 84 minutes of play.
Cori Coco Gauff broke three times the serve of her opponent on her way to victory in the first set. At the beginning of the second set, she lost her serve twice, but managed to return the breaks immediately, and after 2:3 she won four games in a row and closed the match with her second match point.
This is the sixth match between the two tennis players, with Cori Coco Gauff claiming only her second success in the rivalry between them. This was also the fourth WTA trophy for her and second of the year after the one in Oakland, which she won in January.
On the other hand, Maria Sakkari has won one singles title on the WTA Tour at the 2019 Morocco Open, although reaching the semi-finals of the French Open and the US Open in 2021.
