Leylah Fernandez delivers another surprise after defeating the fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina

Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez reached the semi-finals of the US Open after defeating the fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina by 2-1 (3:6, 6:3, 7:6). The match lasted almost two hours and a half. The Canadian had almost lost the match in the third set, despite her comfortable advantage, but in the end succeeded to win and reach the semi-finals.

Leylah Fernandez made 42 winners against 32 for her opponent. However, she also made more unforced errors. And despite the good service of Elina Svitolina, the Canadian teenager took the win.

The first set started game-for-game with easy wins of the service games for both players. However, in the sixth game, Leylah Fernandez had two break points. Elina Svitolina saved the first, but the second was successful and the Canadian player got an advantage, winning the game. There were no breaks by the end of the game and Leylah Fernandez won the set with 6:3 for 40 minutes.

The second set was not much different with both players winning their service games. In the fourth game, Elina Svitolina had two break points and succeeded to take advantage. She made another break in the sixth game and took a lead of 5:1. By the end of the set, she succeeded to keep her advantage despite losing one of her service games and took the set by 6:3.

In the third set, Leylah Fernandez took a comfortable lead of 5:2 after registering two breaks against one for the opponent. And when she was serving for the match, the Canadian tennis player made a mistake and the set was tied. Thus the third set reached the tiebreak, which was won by Leylah Fernandez with 7:5.

On the semi-finals, Leylah Fernandez will face the winner in the match between Barbora Krejcikova and Aryna Sabalenka.
