Leylah Fernandez goes ahead at the US Open and qualified for the quarter-finals after defeating Angelique Kerber with 2-1 (4:6, 7:6, 6:2). The Canadian teenager needed two hours and 18 minutes to close the match in her favor. Leylah Fernandez made 45 winners against 28 for Angelique Kerber. However, the Canadian also more unforced errors 34-22.

The first set was for Angelique Kerber, turning it from 4:2 for Leylah Fernandez. The German player succeeded to return the break and surprised the Canadian with another one to close the set at 6:4.

The second set was the most dramatic in the match. Leylah Fernandez lost her service game at the beginning and gave a chance to Angelique Kerber to have the advantage to win the match. However, in the 8th game, the German lost on zero and the result went 4:4. Leylah Fernandez lost a breakpoint at 6:5, but Angelique Kerber saved it and turned the set into a tiebreak. Leylah Fernandez took a lead of 4:1 in the tiebreak and despite losing two more service balls won it by 7:5.

The third set started with both players winning their service games with both saving one break point. In the fifth game, Leylah Fernandez did not miss her chance and won the break, this taking a lead. She won her service game on zero and even registered a second break to lead by 5:2. The 8th game was very hard with two break points for Angelique Kerber, but in the end, Leylah Fernandez succeeded to take it and the match.

The next opponent of the Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez will be the world’s No 5 Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who defeated by 2-0 (6:3, 6:3) the 12th-seeded Romanian Simona Halep.
