Ons Jabeur: I want to use my experience and do better this time

Ons Jabeur WTA

Ons Jabeur was one set away from winning the Wimbledon title last year, but now the Tunisian tennis player is hoping to go one step further and make history. She took the first set in last year’s final before Elena Rybakina to comeback to win her career-first Grand Slam title.

The 28-year-old Tunisian tennis player, who also lost in the final of the US Open last year, will once again attempt to become the first African and Arab player to win a Grand Slam singles title.

“People mention that I’m a finalist from last year, but it’s not ok to go into the dressing room and see Elena’s picture. I’m trying to remove it”, joked Ons Jabeur at a press conference ahead of the grass-court tournament in London. “But being in the final is great. It’s a Grand Slam final. I just want to use this experience, use the pressure I felt last year to do better this year. My first goal here is really to enjoy the grass game, maybe make bigger memories than last year or the year before”, added she.

Sixth-seeded Ons Jabeur faces Magdalena Frech (Poland) in the first round, and the Tunisian said the first week would be “very difficult”. This year, she may face Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals.

“Normally I don’t, I don’t look at the draw, but it’s a mistake to look at social media”, said Ons Jabeur. “Our half of the scheme is more contested than the other”, added she.
