British teenager Emma Raducanu continues her winning series at the US Open and qualified for the third round after a straight-set win versus China’s Zhang Shuai. The British talent needed one hour and 21 minutes to win by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4) versus the 32-year-old Chinese.
Next, she will face the Spanish player Sara Sorribes Tormo, who eliminated the Taiwanese player Hsieh Su-Wei with 2-0 (6:1, 6:3), on Saturday for a place in the fourth round.
Playing aggressively and confidently from the start, Emma Raducanu dominated to such an extent that the scoreline alone did not fully do justice to her superiority. With Emma Raducanu leading by a set and a double break, even a glum-looking Zhang was stunned by the quality of her opponent.
On serve, she won 28 of 33 first-serve points as Zhang won just 11 return points.
“She was definitely going to throw everything at me and wasn’t going to let me run away with the match”, said Emma Raducanu. “As soon as I dropped off my level, like five percent, she was all over me and had me running corner to corner. I’m very proud of myself to regroup and come through the match, being resilient is one of my strengths”, added she.
