Petra Kvitova won the WTA 500 German Open title

Petra Kvitova WTA 500 German Open title

The Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova won her second title for the season after triumphing at the WTA 500 German Open in Berlin over Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 2-0 (6:2, 7:6). Petra Kvitova, the WTA world No 9 and two-time Wimbledon Grand Slam champion, claimed her sixth career grass court title.

Having also won the Miami tournament earlier in the season, the Berlin title is the 31st for Petra Kvitova. Of the currently active players, only Venus Williams won more, having 49 tournament victories to her credit.

Her form is on the rise again ahead of this year’s edition of Wimbledon, having won 12 of her last 13 matches on grass since last year’s Eastbourne, and has lost just four sets in the same period.

Croatian player Donna Vekic was enjoying a good run before today’s final, but the stats were totally in Petra Kvitova’s side, who have won four of the five matches to date between the two. The 33-year-old Czech tennis player, for whom today’s final was 42nd in her career, relied on a strong serve and a steady game from the starting line. In the first set, Petra Kvitova lost just eight serve points, reflecting the only break point she had to deal with. And in turn she made two breakss for 4:2 and 6:2, taking the first set in 35 minutes.

In the second set, the Croatian decided to take a risk and at the beginning it worked out very well for her. She took a 3:1 lead, winning 14 of 20 points. However, at 4:5, she allowed a break, which sent the set into a tiebreak. In it, the Czech player made fewer mistakes and won it 8:6.

Thus, Petra Kvitova celebrated with the WTA 500 German Open title.
