Organizers of the USATF NYC Grand Prix have announced that world and Olympic 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone will compete in the 400m hurdles in New York on June 24.
The American, who was voted the No 1 Athlete in the World for 2022, has not lost in her crowning event since 2021, breaking the world record four times.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone opened the 2023 summer season with a personal best of 49.71 sec in the 400m at the Paris Diamond League last week.
In New York, she will face Olympic 200m bronze medalist Gabrielle Thomas, who has also chosen to start in the 400m. Earlier this year, she recorded a personal best single lap time of 49.68 sec.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is an American hurdler and sprinter who competes in the 400m hurdles. She is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion with the Games record, and 2022 World champion with a world record time of 50.68 sec. Setting four world records during 13 months, she was the first woman to break the 52-second (June 2021) and 51-second (July 2022) barriers in the 400m hurdles. She won the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships. At all three competitions, she also took gold as part of a women’s 4x400m relay team.
