Two-time Olympic and world 1,500m champion Faith Kipyegon will renew her rivalry with Laura Muir at the Florence Diamond League on June 2. Faith Kipyegon set a Kenyan national record of 3:53.91 min in Florence 2021. She holds the all-time second fastest time in the event, just 0.30 sec off Genzebe Dibaba’s world record (3:50.37 min).

Faith Kipyegon opened the summer season in Doha with 3:58.57 min. Laura Muir is an Olympic silver medalist and world bronze medalist in the 1,500m. She is also the British record holder with 3:54.50 min.

Faith Kipyegon is a Rio 2016 Olympic and Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion with the Games record at the latter, she is the second woman in history to claim back-to-back Olympic titles at the event. On the track she has won or finished second in every major championships since 2015, and is regarded the greatest female 1,500m runner in history.

Faith Kipyegon is a two-time world champion from 2017 and 2022 as well as two-time world silver medalist from 2015, when she lost only to the multiple world record-holder Genzebe Dibaba, and 2019, when she returned after giving birth in previous year. In August 2022, she achieved the second-fastest time in history, setting her consecutive Kenyan record.

On the other hand, Laura Muir is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500m, having previously finished seventh in the event at the Rio 2016 Olympics. She won the bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships, and has three other top five placings in 1,500m finals at the World Athletics Championships, finishing fifth in 2015, fourth in 2017 and fifth in 2019. She is a two-time European 1,500m champion from 2018 and 2022 as well as the 2022 Commonwealth Games 1500m champion and 800m bronze medalist.
