Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza started with victories in the first round of the US Open

Former world’s No 1 Romanian player Simona Halep started with a victory at the US Open. Simona Halep, who has been a semi-finalist in 2015, defeated Italian Camila Giorgi with 2-0 (6:4, 7:6) in 95 minutes.

The Romanian made a break in the ninth game on her way to success in the first set. In the second set, the two exchanged two breaks, and in the 12th game, Simona Halep wasted two match points. In the tiebreak, however, she dominated and closed the match at 7:3.

The ninth-seeded Garbine Muguruza (Spain) achieved a difficult success over Donna Vekic (Croatia) with 2-0 (7:6, 7:6) in a match that last two hours and 18 minutes.

The Spaniard, who is the world’s No 10, overcame a deficit of 2:4 in the first set, took a 5:2 lead in the tiebreak and after 7:4 took the lead in the result. In the second set, Garbine Muguruza had a lead of 3:0, but allowed an equalizer at 5:5. In the tiebreak, she took the lead with 5:3 and after 7:5 she reached the final success.

In other matches of the first round, Kristína Kucova (Slovakia) defeated Ann Li (USA) with 2-0 (7:5, 6:1).

The US Open this year is being held with fans, after last year it was without due to the coronavirus pandemic.
