Johanna Konta withdrew from the US Open due to an injury

Johanna Konta

The British No 1 Johanna Konta withdrew from the US Open due to a thigh injury. The news broke just hours before the 30-year-old was set to play her opening match in New York on Monday against the French Kristina Mladenovic.

The reason for Konta’s late withdrawal was injury with the Brit replaced in the draw by lucky loser Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia.

The withdrawal marks another setback for Johanna Konta in what has turned out an extremely difficult summer as she also withdrew from Wimbledon and the Olympics after testing positive for Covid-19. She also withdrew in the third round at Montreal due to a knee injury, before falling in the first round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati in the build-up to the final Grand Slam of the season. Johanna Konta has won four singles titles on the WTA Tour, as well as 11 singles and four doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit.

The Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady (USA) also withdrew due to injury from the US Open tennis championship. Jennifer Brady, a semifinalist at last year’s Grand Slam tournament in New York, has not played since she was forced to withdraw from her match in the second round of the tournament in Cincinnati against Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia).

Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, also retired for medical reasons.
