In June last year, three-time Olympic hammer throw champion Anita Wlodarczyk was injured while fighting a thief and required surgery. Now the 37-year-old Polish athlete is healthy and ready to compete again. The world record holder in the event will compete in the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on May 13, her first competition in 10 months.

“I started training only in December last year after the rehabilitation. I am happy to be back in Nairobi because I love the atmosphere and the racing sector. The people in Kenya are warm, I also love the food here”, shared Anita Wlodarczyk upon her arrival in Kenya.

She will be chasing her fifth world title in Budapest this summer but is still a long way from the distance she wants to reach.

“I really want to start with 75m at the Kip Keino Classic before I get to 78m in Budapest”, said Anita Wlodarczyk.

She has a personal best of 82.98 m from 2016, which is also the current world record in the event.

Anita Wlodarczyk is a Polish hammer thrower. She is the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic champion, and the first woman in history to throw the hammer over 80 m. She is considered the greatest women’s hammer thrower of all time. She was voted the Polish Sports Personality of the Year in 2016 and received the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta in 2021 for her outstanding achievements in sport.
