The top-seeded Iga Swiatek (Poland) qualified for the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open after a three-set victory versus Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia). The Polish tennis player won the match by 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 6:3) in 2:27 hours.
Ekaterina Alexandrova took a lead in the first set with an early break, but Iga Swiatek returned the break in the sixth game and registered ano more in that 10th game, which closed the set at 6:4 in her favor.
The second set started perfectly for the Polish player, who broke in the beginning and took a lead of 3:0. She also served for the match Ekaterina Alexandrova returned the break in the 9th game to remain in the match. Iga Swiatek received a match point in the next game at the serve of the Russian player, but Ekaterina Alexandrova saved it and again stayed in the match. The set went into a tiebreak, which the Russian player won by 7-3 and equalized the sets.
Iga Swiatek started strongly the third set. She broke her opponent for 3:1 and did not allowed any breakpoint by the end of the set. The Polish world’s number one even made another break to close the set at 6:3 and thus qualify for the quarter-finals of the clay tournament, where will face Petra Martic (Croatia)
The third-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) also qualified for the next round after defeating Martina Trevisan (Italy) by 2-1 (6:3, 2:6, 6:3) in 2:07 hours. In the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open she will face 12th-seeded Veronika Kudermetova (Russia).
