Elena Rybakina made a surprise exit in the second round of the women’s tennis tournament WTA 1000 Madrid Open after losing by 1-2 (7:5, 4:6, 2:6) to Anna Kalinskaya (Russia). For the representative of Kazakhstan, it was the first match of the tournament after she got a rest at the start.

Anna Kalinskaya, who is WTA No 60, won in two hours and 13 minutes and gained revenge against Elena Rybakina

The leader in the rankings Iga Switek did not make such a mistake and started with an easy 2-0 (6:3. 6:2) victory against Julia Grabher. The Polish player recorded an early break in the second set, and although the Austrian quickly got it back, Iga Switek cruised through the remaining games without a hitch.

Iga Switek missed the tournament in Madrid last year due to an injury.

The 3rd-seeded Jessica Pegula, who lost 2022 final against Ons Jabeur, defeated Magdalena Frech (Poland) by 2-0 (7:6, 6:3). Her American compatriot Alycia Parks prevailed over the 15th-seeded Victoria Azarenka by 2-0 (6:2, 7:6).

Alycia Parks, who is world’s No 40, is now 4-1 in her career against top-20 players.

Former Roland Garros champion and 11th-seeded Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) defeated Danka Kovinic (Montenegro) by 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:0). Martina Trevisan (Italy) prevailed with 2-0 (6:2, 7:5) against Eugenie Bouchard (Canada).

Anastasia Potapova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Daria Kasatkina, Veronika Kudermetova and Bernarda Pera also advanced to the third round.
