Sifan Hassan is the versatile athlete

Sifan Hassan athletics champion

The Dutch middle- and long-distance runner Sifan Hassan is definitely among the most impressive athletes, and her capabilities extend from 800m to the marathon. A few days ago, the Ethiopian, who competes for the Netherlands, won the London Marathon on her debut in the discipline with a time of 2:18:33 hours. This result certainly impressed, and no less respectable are her achievements in the shorter disciplines.

Here are Sifan Hassan’s personal bests in the disciplines from 800 meters to marathon:
800m – 1:56.81 min
1,500m – 3:51.95 min (world champion in Doha 2019)
1 mile – 4:12.33 min (world record)
3,000m – 8:18.49 min (European record)
5,000m – 14:22.12 min (Olympic champion Tokyo)
10,000 m – 29:06.82 min (Olympic champion Tokyo)
Half marathon – 1:05:15 hours (European record)
Marathon – 2:18:33 hours (winner of the London Marathon 2023).

At the World Athletics Championships, Sifan Hassan took 1,500m and 10,000m titles in 2019, becoming the only athlete (male or female) in history to win both these events at a single World Championships or Olympic Games. She won a bronze at the 1,500m in 2015, and at the 5,000m in 2017 when she also finished fifth in the 1,500m. Sifan Hassan is a three-time World Indoor Championships medallist, winning gold at 1,500m in 2016 as well as silver at 3,000m and bronze for 1,500m in 2018. She earned six European medals (including two cross-country titles), and one European indoor medal. She is also a three-time Diamond League winner, having secured the 1,500m/5,000m double in 2019.

Sifan Hassan is the world record holder for both the one-mile and 5km road race, both set in 2019, as well as the one-hour run, set in 2020. She held a world record at 10,000m for two days in June 2021. She owns five European records (1,500m, 3,000m, 5,000m, 10,000m, half marathon) and four Dutch records.
