Paula Badosa qualified for the third round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open

Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa qualified for the third round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open after a 3-set battle with Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy). The Spanish player won the match by 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:4) after two and a half hours of play.

Paula Badosa won the first set after breaking the serve of her opponent 3 times, despite that he first break was for Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The second set started equally with the exchange of breaks, but this time the Italian succeeded to make one break more and won the set by 6:4 and thus equalized the score. The decisive third set was the first to run without any breaks. Both players won their serve games, but Paula Badosa succeeded to register a ate break and thus won it by 6:4.

In the third round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open Paula Badosa will face the 6th-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA), who defeated Irene Burillo Escorihuela (Spain) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:1).

The 9th-seeded Maria Sakkari also advanced to the third round after a straight-set victory versus Arantxa Rus (Netherlands) and will face Rebeka Masarova (Spain), who defeated Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 2-0 (6:1, 7:6).

The 10th-seeded Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) surprisingly lost in the second round of the tournament to Jule Niemeier (Germany) by 0-2 (6:7, 1:6), as well as the 13th-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia (Brazil), who lost to the 15-year-old Russian player Mirra Andreeva by 0-2 (6:7, 3:6).

Camila Osorio (Colombia) also brought a surprise, defeating Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:4, 6:3).

Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) defeated the Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova by 2-0 (6:0, 6:3) and also advanced to the third round.
