Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard qualified for the second round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open after defeating Dayana Yastremska (Ukraine) by 2-1 (6:7, 6:2, 6:2) in a match that lasted 2:21 hours.

The Canadian player lost the first set, in which both players exchanged 3 breaks each, after a tiebreak but did not give any chance to her opponent during the next two sets and won the match. Thus, Eugenie Bouchard qualified for the second round, where will face the 18th-seeded Martina Trevisan (Italy).

Magdalena Frech (Poland) defeated Jasmine Paolini (Italy) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3), while Kaia Kanepi (Estonia) surprisingly lost to Irene Burillo Escorihuela (Spain) by 1-2 (7:6, 2:6, 4:6). Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia) also advanced to the second round after defeating Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (Andora) by 2-1 (6:1, 6:7, 7:6).

Lesia Tsurenko (Ukraine) did not have any difficulties against Lucia Bronzetti (Italy), winning by 2-0 (6:1, 6:3) and advanced to the second round, as well as Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic), who defeated Marina Bassols (Spain) also by 2-0 (6:1, 6:3).

Danka Kovinic (Montenegro) defeated Sara Errani (Italy) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:0), while Alize Cornet (France) won her opening match of the tournament versus Elena Gabriela Ruse (Romania) by 2-1 (6:7, 6:4, 6:3).

Laura Siegemund (Germany) won versus Nadia Podoroska (Argentina) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:3, 6:3), Alycia Parks (USA) defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (Slovakia) by 2-1 (6:2, 6:7, 6:2), and Jaqueline Cristian (Romania) surprisingly eliminated Sloane Stephens (USA) after 2-1 (5:7, 6:4, 6:4).
