In the first set, Iga Swiatek achieved two breaks and won by 6:1, but encountered significantly more difficulties in the second set. In it, the Chinese lost her serve again, but managed to equalize to 4:4. The Polish tennis player then won the next two games and ended the match.
“I had to be 100% focused. It was like that from the beginning to the end of the match. I had to constantly think about my tactics and my technique. I showed a good game, even after the break I made”, said Iga Swiatek after the match.
In the next round of the tournament, she will face Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic). The former champion in Stuttgart and former leader in the world rankings prevailed against Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 1-2 (6:2, 6:7, 7:6) in 2:23 hours.
The 5th-seeded Cori Coco Gauff ended her participation in the German city. The American teenager was eliminated after a surprising defeat with 0-2 (2:6, 3:6) against Anastasia Potapova (Russia).
Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa also advanced to the quarter-finals after a victory against her compatriot Cristina Bucsa by 2-0 (6:1, 6:2).
