Andrea Petkovic won her first WTA trophy in 6 years

German tennis player Andrea Petkovic reached her first singles title in more than six years after winning the first-ever women’s tennis tournament in the Romanian city of Cluj. The top-seeded Andrea Petkovic won with 2-0 (6:1, 6:1) versus Mayar Sherif (Egypt).

“I am so happy”, said Andrea Petkovic after the victory. “I personally feel these six years are so much more because a lot has happened in them. I was ready to retire and I almost did, I started working in five new fields. But now I do what I love the most – I play tennis. I won and I guarantee that this is the most pleasant feeling in the world”, added she.

Andrea Petkovic, a former world No 9, won her seventh title in 61 minutes against Mayar Sherif. The trophy is the fifth on clay for the German, whose best achievement in her career was from “Roland Garros” in 2014. Then she played in the semifinals.

Andrea Petkovic reached the final of two of her last three tournaments, having not played for a trophy since Antwerp in 2015. The German finished second in Hamburg earlier this month and has won 12 of her last 14 matches.

Mayar Sherif played in the final for the first time and quickly lost to Andrea Petkovic. The 33-year-old German won 2/3 of the return games in the second serve of the Egyptian and this resulted in five breaks of ten possibilities.
