Mikaela Shiffrin added another remarkable achievement to her great career – a record victory No 87 in the World Cup, with which she overtakes the 34-year-old record achieved by the legend Ingemar Stenmark.
After yesterday’s giant slalom Mikaela Shiffrin equaled the famous Swedish technician with success No 86, now she conquered the slalom in the Swedish winter center Are with a 0.92-second lead.
Wendy Holdener finished second almost by one second, and the third position remained for the home representative Anna Larsson Sven, whose passive was 0.95 sec.
Mikaela Shiffrin can now easily be called the greatest alpine ski racer of all time. Ingemar Stenmark himself, who chose not to attend the race weekend in Are, said briefly that the American was far better than he had ever been.
Naturally, Are is a special place for Mikaela Shiffrin and due to the fact that it was on this track on December 20, 2012 that she achieved the first World Cup victory of her career. The American now also has a record five Are slalom victories, as well as a total of 53 victories in the discipline – which, of course, is also a record for a skier, because Ingemar Stenmark has 46.
Mikaela Shiffrin had a solid lead from the first heat and even increased it in the second.
“It will be hard to accept that I am the greatest of all time. The best feeling in skiing is winning. I knew I was leading after the first run and that I had to be smart in the second. But I also had to be fast . I want to thank my whole team and everyone who has supported me all these years. I dedicate this victory to them”, said Mikaela Shiffrin after the final.
Wendy Holdener, who settled for second in Are , is the only one with more than one win in the event this season (at Killington and Sestriere). Anna Swenn-Larsson failed to become the first Swede at the World Cup with more than one slalom win since 2005/2006, when Anna Persson achieved three. Maria Pietila Holmner remains the only Swede with a victory in Are since December 13, 2014.
