The Rio 2016 Olympic champion, the United States, defeated the European champion Serbia with 79:59 (25:12, 16; 11, 17:16, 21:20) and qualified for the final of the Olympic women’s basketball tournament in Tokyo.
The US team, which has won seven of its nine Olympic titles since the 1984 Olympics, has not lost for 53 matches. The last defeat dates back to 1992. The American basketball players led by 13 points after the end of the first half and by the end of the match, they kept the difference.
For the United States, Brittney Griner made a double-double – 15 points and 12 rebounds, Chelsea Gray added 14 points, and Breanna Stewart recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds.
For Serbia, the US-born Yvonne Anderson scored 15 points.
In the final match on Saturday, the United States will play the winner of the second semifinal between the hosts from Japan and France. The loser will face Serbia for the bronze medals.
