The sixth-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia prevailed over Marie Bouzkova (Czech Republic) by 2-1 (4:6, 6:3, 6:0) in 2:27 hours. The Brazilian lost the first set but improved her first serve and accuracy to overturn the match.
In the next round, Beatriz Haddad Maia will face the world’s number 45 Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan), who defeated Bianca Andreescu (Canada) by 2-0 (7:6, 6:2) for 1:41 hours.
Shelby Rogers (USA), who passed through qualifications, also advances to the second round after beating Leylah Annie Fernandez (Canada) by 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 6:1). In the next round, she will face the seventh-seeded Anett Kontaveit (Estonia).
Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) eliminated Elena-Gabriela Ruse (Romania) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:4).
