Iga Swiatek started with a straight-set win in Australia

Iga Swiatek

The leader in the women’s tennis world ranking, Iga Swiatek, recorded a successful start to the Australian Open tennis championship. In a match of the first round of the women’s tournament, the Polish player prevailed by 2-0 (6:4, 7:5) over the German Jule Niemeier in exactly two hours of play.

Despite her victory, Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek showed some fluctuations in her game, which were particularly visible in the second set. In the first set, the Pole and the German won their service games without much difficulty until the last tenth game, in which Iga Swiatek received her first two break points of the match and on the second attempt was able to realize it.

However, Jule Niemeier, who last year played in the semi-finals at Wimbledon, started better in the second set and broke in the first game. The German held her lead to 3:5, but then Iga Swiatek played her best tennis and won four straight games to turn the set around to win it 7:5.

In the second round of the tournament, the top-seeded Iga Swiatek will play the Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, who defeated the Hungarian Panna Udvardy by 2-0 (6:4, 6:1).

Two other former Roland Garros champions continue to the next stage of the tournament. Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, who is 17th-seeded, defeated Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska by 2-0 (6:4, 6:2) in just 72 minutes of play. The 20th-seeded Barbora Krejcikova managed to overcome by 2-0 (6:3, 6:1) her compatriot Sara Bejlek, also in 72 minutes.

Jil Teichmann also qualified for the second round. The Swiss won by 2-0 (7:5, 6:1) her match versus the British Harriet Dart and in the second round she will play with the Chinese Zhu Lin, who defeated the Canadian Rebecca Marino by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4).
