Former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin reached the semi-finals of the women’s tournament in WTA 250 Hobart International. The 24-year-old American tennis player defeated Anhelina Kalinina (Ukraine)by 2-1 (4:6, 6:3, 6:1).
Sofia Kenin is currently ranked 280th in the WTA Women’s Rankings after peaking at No 4. But injuries and poor form have dragged her down since her success at Melbourne Park in 2020. The top 4 finish in WTA 250 Hobart International is her first semi-final at a WTA tournament or higher since Roland Garros in 2020.
“I just tried to keep the fight on the court. Anhelina Kalinina is a tough opponent. And I knew that I have to give my all”, said Sofia Kenin.
Her next opponent is the 21-year-old Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who in the first round eliminated the third-seeded Alize Cornet (France) and now defeated the 6th-seeded Bernarda Pera with 2-1 (5:7, 7:6, 6:4).
The 24-year-old Russian Anna Blinkova is also in the semi-finals, eliminating Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4). In the semi-final she will face Lauren Davis (USA).
