European champions Norway won Group A of the women’s handball tournament at the Tokyo Olympics after a 37:25 (16:11) victory over the hosts from Japan and will play in the quarter-finals against Hungary. However, the Norwegians can meet in the semifinals the Russian Olympic Committee, which won gold in Rio 2016.
The Norwegians were not hindered in any way in their last match of the group stage and led by five goals to the break. Marit Frafjord was the top scorer with 6 goals, and Veronica Kristiansen, Stine Skogrand and Nora Moerk scored 5 goals each. Aya Yokoshima and Mana Ohyama scored the same for the Japanese.
The Russians will play against Montenegro, after finishing second in Group B. Today they beat Spain 34:31 (18:17), after Anna Vyakhireva and Marta Lopez Herrero stood out with 7 goals each.
In the other stream of the quarter-finals, the world champion Netherlands will play against the Olympic runner-up France, and Sweden will meet the Republic of Korea.
