A Women’s League of Nations tournament, identical to the one for men, will start in 2023, announced the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

The competition, which will give a chance to participate in European and world championships, will start in the Autumn next year. The teams will be divided into leagues based on their ranking. From now on, it is clear that there will be three leagues, and the teams in them will be divided into groups of three or four.

“Back in the summer I said that we would continue to invest in women’s football. Now we are doing exactly that”, said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. “After holding a European Championship with historic success this summer, now is the time to take the next step in the development of women’s national football. We have built an open competition system where every match will matter and is a full reflection of the European sports model. Confident I am sure that this format will help all national associations and keep alive the hopes of many countries to qualify for a major football forum”, added he.

Last month, UEFA presented its idea of creating the Nations League during a meeting of UEFA members in Frankfurt on the occasion of the draw for the men’s Euro 2024 qualifiers. UEFA officially ratified the new format on Wednesday.

The Men’s League pf Nations was introduced in 2018 with the idea of having more competitive matches to limit the number of friendlies as much as possible.
