Japanese judoka Akira Sone brought the hosts the ninth title in the judo tournament at the Tokyo Olympics.
The 21-year-old Sone, the world champion from Tokyo 2019, won in the final in the heaviest (+78 kg) with “ippon” one of the most successful competitors in the category Idalys Ortiz from Cuba.
Idalys Ortiz 31, won a medal at the fourth consecutive Olympics. She has a title from London 2012, a silver from Rio 2016, and a bronze from Beijing 2008. The Cuban has seven medals from world championships, two of which are gold.
The hosts from Japan set a record of nine titles in the judo tournament and improved their performance at the 2004 Athens Games when they won eight gold medals.
The bronze medals were won by Iryna Kindzerska (Azerbaijan) and Romane Dicko (France).
Iryna Kindzerska defeated Xu Shiyan (China) with an ippon, and Romane Dicko prevailed with an ippon over Kayra Sayit
