Iga Swiatek qualified for the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Ostrava Open in Czech Republic. The top-seeded Polish tennis player won the first set against Ajla Tomljanovic by 7:5, and at 2:2 in the second part, the Australian withdrew from the match due to a knee injury.
The world number one played her first match since winning the US Open title in September. Iga Swiatek scored a decisive break for 7:5 in the first set to take the lead in the score.
Ajla Tomljanovic, the world’s No 34, had problems already in the second game of the second set and was unable to continue her participation in the match.
“It’s not easy to get into a rhythm after more than three weeks of rest, while Ajla had already played a few matches. This match was difficult for me and helped me to prepare for what is to come. I’m very sorry that this match ended like this”, said Iga Swiatek after the win.
In the next round, she will face Caty McNally or Karolína Muchova.
In another match from the WTA 500 Ostrava Open, the 2nd-seeded Paula Badosa was defeated by Petra Kvitova by 0-2 (6:7, 4:6). The Czech player made two breaks in the second set but needed eight match points to win the match after 122 minutes.
The Wimbledon 2022 champion Elena Rybakina had a hard match versus Aliaksandra Sasnovich, but finally won by 2-1 (6:7, 6:4, 7:5) in 2:36 hours and qualified for the quarterfinals.
