The top-seeded Paula Badosa was eliminated in the second round of the WTA 500 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan. The Spanish tennis player lost to the Chinese Qinwen Zheng by 0-2 (3:6, 2:6) in 78 minutes.
The match started perfectly for Paula Badosa, who took a lead by 3:1 after a break in the third game. However, after that she lost 5 consecutive games to lose the set by 3:6. The Chinese player used the momentum at the beginning of the second set and took a lead with a break ahead. Paula Badosa won her next two serve games but still was behind her opponent, who did not give any breakpoint even. In the seventh game of the set, the serve of the Spanish player was weak again and Qinwen Zheng had three breakpoints, winning already the first and thus served for the match. The Chinese did not allowed any surprise at her serve and won the set by 6:2.
Thus Qinwen Zheng qualified for the third round of the WTA 500 Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan, where will face the American Claire Liu, who made another surprise by eliminating Elise Mertens by 2-0 (6:4, 6:1).
The third surprise for the day came by another Chinese – Shuai Zhang, who eliminated the second-seeded Caroline Garcia in the second round by 2-1 (4:6, 7:6, 7:6).
The third-seeded Garbine Muguruza defeated Despina Papamichail by 2-0 (6:4, 6:2) to qualify for the third round.
