Last year’s US Open champion Emma Raducanu was eliminated in the first round of this year’s edition of the tennis championship, after falling by 0-2 (3:6, 3:6) to Alize Cornet.
The British tennis talent had a bad day both on her own serve and return. She won just 40% of her serve games and committed 18 unforced errors, recording just seven game-winning shots. Emma Raducanu also took medical leave due to wrist problems.
The British tennis talent and her French opponent exchanged breaks in four of the first five games of the second set, but while Alize Cornet was able to stabilize her own serve, Emma Raducanu was not. She dropped her serve in the seventh and ninth games as well, and Alize Cornet ended the match with the first match point.

Before the New York match, Naomi Osaka held a 3-0 advantage in career games against Danielle Collins. The Japanese, US Open champion in 2018 and 2020, as well as the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021, allowed a third break for 3:5 in the second set and Danielle Collins finished the match with the first match point in the next game on her own serve.
The 22nd-seeded Karolína Pliskova defeated Magda Linette 2-1 (6:2, 4:6, 7:6), while Jelena Ostapenko was defeated by Qinwen Zheng with 1-2 (3:6, 6:3, 4:6).
