Wilma Murto lived a Finnish fairy tale tonight at the Olympic Stadium in Munich. The Finish athlete, 23, set three national records and won the European pole vault title with a championship-record-equalling 4.85m. Wilma Murto, a world junior bronze medallist, ended the winning streak of Katerina Stefanidi, who was the European champion at the last two championships – Amsterdam 2016 and Berlin 2018.
The Greek athlete, who is Olympic champion in Rio 2016 and world champion in London 2017, remained with the silver with 4.75m. Tina Šutej (Slovenia) finished with the same result in third place, the bronze medalist of the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade 2022.
In the women’s hammer throw, the European title went to Bianca Ghelber (Romania) with 72.72m, and the top 3 was completed by Ewa Rozanska (Poland) with a personal record of 72.12m and the Italian Sara Fantini with 71.58m.
