Daria Kasatkina is a Russian tennis player, who made her top-ten debut in the WTA rankings towards the end of the 2018 season. She has won four WTA Tour titles in singles as well as one title in doubles.
Daria Kasatkina was born on May 7, 1997, in Tolyatti, Russia. She was introduced to tennis when she was six years old. She initially played two to three times a week for two years. In time she began competing in higher-level tournaments In 2009, she was the runner-up at the prestigious Gold Reserv tournament in Russia, and in 2010 she reached the quarter-finals of the Junior Orange Bowl. As a junior, Kasatkina was ranked as high as No 3 in the world. She began competing on the ITF Junior Circuit shortly after turning 14 years old. In the junior tour, she won the European Junior Championships and the Junior French Open / Roland Garros.
Daria Kasatkina made her professional debut in 2013 at the $10,000 Antalya (Turkey), but lost in the first round.
However, the next year, she already won her first ITF title at $15,000 W15 Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt). Later the same year she won also the $25,000 W25 Telavi (Georgia) and debuted in the WTA tour in WTA 500 VTB Kremlin Cup.
In 2015, Daria Kasatkina won five more ITF trophies – $25,000 W25 Daytona Beach, FL (USA), $25,000 W25 Caserta (Italy), two times at $25,000 W25 Minsk (Belarus), and $50,000 W60+H Saint-Malo (France). She also makes a breakthrough in the US Open, reaching the third round, and the WTA 500 VTB Kremlin Cup, reaching the semi-finals.
In 2016, Daria Kasatkina turned her calendar mostly to the WTA tour. She reached the third round of the Australian Open and on the next month the semi-finals of the WTA 500 St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy. In March, she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open, while in April played in the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open. During the year she also reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open Rogers Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympics. Thus she skyrockets to the WTA ranking No 26 at the end of the season.
Daria Kasatkina won her first WTA title in 2017 at the WTA 500 Credit One Charleston Open. During the year, she reached the fourth round of the US Open and the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open. At the end of the season, the Russian tennis player succeeded to reach the finals of the WTA 500 VTB Kremlin Cup but lost to Julia Goerges. She closed the season as the world’s No 24.
In 2018, Daria Kasatkina entered the world’s Top 10. She reached the semi-finals of the WTA 500 St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy at the beginning of the season, as well as the finals of the WTA 500 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open. In May, she continue with her perfect performance, reaching the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open and the French Open / Roland Garros. At the Wimbledon, Daria Kasatkina reached again the quarter-finals and at the end of the year, she won the title at the WTA 500 VTB Kremlin Cup. Thus she first time entered the world’s Top 10 and finished the season at WTA No 10.
The 2019 season, however, was not much successful for Daria Kasatkina, as her biggest success was the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open and the third round of the WTA 1000 Rome Open. Her WTA ranking dropped and ended the year at the world’s No 70.
In 2020, she failed to improve her performance much, reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Open 6ème Sens – Métropole de Lyon and the third round of the WTA 1000 Rome Open.
Daria Kasatkina returned on the winning path in 2021, after winning the titles at the WTA 250 Phillip Island Trophy and WTA 500 St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, and reaching the finals at the WTA 250 Viking Classic Birmingham and WTA 500 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic. She also reached the third round of the French Open / Roland Garros. Following such a good performance, Daria Kasatkina returned to the Top 30 and ended the season as the world’s No 26.
In 2022, the Russian tennis player started the season very well and reached the semi-finals of the WTA 250 Melbourne Summer Set II and WTA 500 Sydney Tennis Classic and the third round of the Australian Open. She reached the third rounds of the WTA 1000 Qatar Total Open and WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open. Her biggest breakthrough came in May when she reached the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Rome Open and the French Open / Roland Garros.
Daria Kasatkina is definitely one of the most talented players. Definitely, we will expect many more great achievements from her in the future.
