Quarantined Belgian skeleton athlete Kim Meylemans relocated to Olympic Village following IOC intervention

Kim Meylemans

Belgian skeleton athlete Kim Meylemans is finally in the Olympic Village after an emotional call for help on social media after a seven-day quarantine. The 25-year-old Belgian tested positive for ЦOVID-19 on arrival in Beijing for the Winter Olympics and was placed in solitary confinement, where she had to take two consecutive negative tests to move to the Olympic Village.

After a negative test, Kim Meylemans expected to go to Yanqing, but she herself revealed through tears on Instagram that an ambulance took her to another building, where she had to spend another seven days in isolation.

“This is an extremely difficult situation for me and I need some time to think about what to do, because I’m not sure I can compete after 14 days of isolation”, wrote the Belgian on social media.

The Belgian delegation reacted immediately and informed the IOC about the situation, as the International Olympic Committee helped the athlete to be transferred to the Olympic Village.

In a new post on social networks, Kim Meylemans revealed that сhe is in a quarantined building in the Olympic Village.

“Obviously the video I posted and the efforts of my Olympic Committee paid off”, said Kim Meylemans, who already feels safe and has the conditions to train.

The official training in the skeleton starts next week, and the competitions start on February 12.

Eleven people linked to the Olympics have been hospitalized for COVID-19 in Beijing since January 23 out of a total of 232 positive cases of coronavirus, said Beijing 2022 Medical Staff Chairman Brian McCloskey.
