The new world record holder in the high jump Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine) believes that she can make a lot of improvements to the achievement. This was announced by the Ukrainian after she was awarded Europe’s number one athlete at a ceremony in Skopje earlier this week.
Yaroslava Mahuchikh, 23, had a great year, becoming Olympic and European champion, the highlight of which was breaking Stefka Kostadinova’s 37-year-old world record. The Ukrainian jumped 210cm at the Diamond League tournament in Paris, but she does not think of stopping there.
“I think I still have room to improve. I can jump up to 215cm. I want to prove my qualities, anything is possible”, said Yaroslava Mahuchikh.
She recalled the evening of July 7, when she broke Stefka Kostadinova’s record. “When I didn’t clear 195cm on my first try, which is the first time this season, I said to myself: I came to set a new personal best, and I can’t even jump 195cm. But then I said to myself, I’m going to have a fantastic night anyway. I jumped 207cm, which is a personal best and a record for Ukraine. I was very happy and my coach asked me if we were going to stop there, but I told her I’d do one attempt for the record. Even before the attempt, I was very happy. I thought what the celebrations would be like in Ukraine if I succeeded”, added she.
