The world’s number six Jessica Pegula (USA) withdrew from the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup team tennis tournament in Spain next month and will be replaced in the Team USA by Ashlyn Krueger, the country’s Tennis Association said.
The organization did not immediately respond why the US Open finalist, who was the team’s top-ranked tennis player, withdrew. Jessica Pegula, who qualified for the season-ending WTA Finals to be held in Riyadh from November 2-9, last competed three weeks ago in Wuhan, where she was eliminated in the third round by Wang Xinyu (China), although reached the doubles final.
Team USA faces Slovakia in the first round of the Billie Jean King Cup finals on November 15, with the winners advancing to play Australia in the quarterfinals.
Ashlyn Krueger, who is ranked 65th in singles and 64th in doubles, joins Danielle Collins, Peyton Stearns, Taylor Townsend and Caroline Dolehide on Team USA.
