The LuckyLoser Eva Lys qualified for the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Japan Women’s Open

The LuckyLoser Eva Lys (Germany) qualified for the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 Japan Women’s Open in Osaka after defeating McCartney Kessler (USA) by 2-1 (7:6, 3:6, 7:5). The match lasted almost 3 hours and offered a lot of emotions on the court.

The American tennis played scored 7 aces, quite more than the one for her opponent, but also committed 10 double faults, while only 4 were in the account of her opponent.

Eva Lys was the first to break the serve of her opponent for 3:1 in the first set, but McCartney Kessler immediately rebroke. Both exchanged one more break in the next games and then won their serve games to 5:5. McCartney Kessler broke the serve of her opponent for 6:5 and served to win the set, but Eva Lys returned the break immediately for 6:6. Thus, the match entered into a tiebreak, in which both players have their chances and result turned over several times, but at the end Eva Lys won it by 9-7 and closed the set at her third set point.

The second set started equally with both players winning their service games without any breakpoint. The first breakpoint came in the sixth game of the set, when Eva Lys gave two opportunities to her opponent at 15-40. McCartney Kessler scored already the first and took a lead by 4:2. In the next game, the German tennis played had a chance to rebreak, but her American opponent saved the breakpoint and won the game to lead by 5:2. Both players exchanged a game, which was enough for McCartney Kessler to win the set by 6:3 and equalize the result.

The third decisive set was also full of emotions. McCartney Kessler lead by 2:0 in the beginning after a break, but Eva Lys equalized immediately to 2:2. The American player saved three breakpoint in the sixth game and both exchanged another break for 4:4. In the 11th game Eva Lys needed also to save three breakpoint but at the end won her service game for 6:5. In the next game she received two break/match points at 15-40 and scored already the first to win the match.

In the quarter-finals, Eva Lys will face Aoi Ito (Japan), who eliminated the 8th-seeded Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:3).

In the other matches from the day, Clara Tauson (Denmark) defeated Harriet Dart (Great Britain) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2) and Suzan Lamens (Netherlands) eliminated Lucia Bronzetti (Italy) after 2-0 (6:3, 6:4).
