The Paris 2024 Olympics champion Qinwen Zheng (China) advanced to the fourth round of the WTA 1000 China Open hard court tennis tournament in Beijing with a prize pool of almost 9 million USD. The fifth-seeded Chinese tennis player eliminated Nadia Podoroska (Argentina) after 2-0 (6:3, 6:2).
Qinwen Zheng started strongly the match, but had a serious problem in the third game, when she needed to save five breakpoints before winning her serve. In any case, she succeeded and on the very next game broke the serve of her opponent taking a lead of 3:1. This proved to be enough for her winning the set, as none of the players reached a breakpoint by its end.
Qinwen Zheng was the first to have a breakpoint in the second set, when she missed two chances to break the serve of her opponent in the third game. However, Nadia Podoroska saved both of the breakpoints and made the result 2:1 in her favor, but this was the last game she won in the match, as her opponent made a streak of five games in a row and closed the set at 6:2.
Qinwen Zheng will face Amanda Anisimova (USA) in the next phase, who prevailed by 2-0 (7:6, 6:4) over Daria Kasatkina (Russia).
Earlier in the day, Mirra Andreeva (Russia) defeated Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:4, 6:4) and will face Magda Linette (Poland) in the fourth round.
