Paula Badosa advanced to the Round of 16 of the WTA 1000 China Open

The 15th-seeded Paula Badosa (Spain) advanced to the Round of 16 of the WTA 1000 China Open after defeating Viktoriya Tomova (Bulgaria) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2) in 1:26 hours.

Paula Badosa scored 2 aces, but also committed 4 double faults against only 2 for the Bulgarian Player. The Spanish player was not much accurate in the first serve, having only 52% success, but won 70% of her first serve points, as well as 57% of her second serve points.

Paula Badosa started with an early break to lead by 2:0, but the Bulgarian player immediately returned it and equalized to 2:2. However, another break in the eighth game of the first set brought another advantage for the Spanish player, which she confirmed by winning her next service game on zero and closed the set at 6:3.

The second set started in similar fashion, as Paula Badosa made early break to lead by 2:0. She kept her advantage and had three breakpoint in the fifth game on 0-40, but Viktoriya Tomova saved all of them and stayed in the match. In the next game Paula Badosa needed to save four breakpoint, but this time she succeeded and kept the result of 4:2. It was followed by another break for the Spaniard, who then closed the set on her serve at 6:2.

The next opponent of Paula Badosa is the winner between Rebecca Sramkova (Slovakia) and 22nd-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia).

Earlier in the day, Anna Kalinskaya (Russia) had a tough match versus Hailey Baptiste (USA) but won after a comeback by 2-1 (3:6, 7:6, 7:6). The same did her compatriot Veronika Kudermetova, who defeated Wang Xinyu (China) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:4, 7:5). Katie Boulter (Great Britain) eliminated Taylor Townsend (USA) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:4), 12th-seeded Diana Shnaider (Russia) did not have any problems against Sofia Kenin (USA) to win by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3), and Yulia Starodubtseva (Ukraine) eliminated Yulia Starodubtseva (Czech Republic) after 2-0 (6:2, 6:2).

The sixth-seeded Emma Navarro (USA) and the 22nd-seeded Anastasia Potapova (Russia) were knocked out of the tournament, losing to Shuai Zhang (China) by 0-2 (4:6, 2:6) and Greet Minnen (Belgium) by 1-2 (5:7, 6:2, 4:6), respectively.

Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia) withdrew from the tournament before the start of heir first matches.
