Iga Swiatek cruised through Ena Shibahara to reach the third round of the US Open

Iga Swiatek Us Open 2024

Top-seeded Iga Swiatek (Poland) cruised to a 2-0 (6:0, 6:1) victory over Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara in just over an hour in the second round of the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.

The Polish tennis player left no doubt about her superiority and after slight hesitation in the first round, when she committed more than 40 unforced errors in a difficult victory against Kamilla Rakhimova (Russia), this time she did not allow any drops in her game and gave only a game to her opponent.

“I’m trying to be really steady and pick the right shots and be active on the court. I’m happy with everything. I just felt the rhythm a lot better. I was a little tense in my previous match, so today I just wanted to focus on the right things and focus on myself”, said Iga Swiatek in the on-court interview.

In the third round, Iga Swiatek will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia), who eliminated Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy) after 2-1 (5:7, 6:1, 6:2).

The fifth-seeded Jasmine Paolini (Italy) spent only a few minutes on the court and qualified for the next round after the retiring of the Czech player Karolina Pliskova, who injured at the beginning of the match. The two played just three games in the first set before the Czech withdrew due to a foot injury.

Jasmine Paolini, a Roland Garros and Wimbledon runner-up, reached the third round of the US Open for the first time in her career.

Ashlyn Krueger (USA) eliminated the 21st-seeded Mirra Andreeva (Russia) after 2-0 (6:1, 6:4). Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (Spain) also advanced to the next round after defeated Katie Boulter (Great Britain) by 2-0 (7:5, 7:5).
