The 8th-seeded Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic), who is the current Wimbledon champion, was surprisingly knocked out in the second round of the US Open by Elena-Gabriela Ruse (Romania) after 0-2 (4:6, 5:7). The 26-year-old Romanian tennis player, who is WTA No 122, had never overcame the second round of a Grand Slam tournament until now. The elimination of two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova, as well as that of Maria Sakkari (Greece) in the first round, cleared the way for the American fans favorite Cori Coco Gauff.
In the third round, Elena-Gabriela Ruse will play against Paula Badosa (Spain), who defeated Taylor Townsend (USA) by 2-0 (6:3, 7:5).
The Paris 2024 Olympic champion and 7th-seeded Qinwen Zheng (China) had a hard match versus Erika Andreeva (Russia) but made a comeback to 2-1 (6:7, 6:1, 6:2). The Chinese closed out the match with her 20th ace as she had a big advantage on serve after the first game.
The American tennis player Madison Keys defeated Maya Joint (Australia) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:0) and in the third round will face Elise Mertens (Belgium), who eliminated Ajla Tomljanovic (Australia) after 2-0 (6:3, 6:2).
German tennis player Jule Niemeier also qualified for the next round after success over Moyuka Uchijima (Japan) with 2-0 (6:4, 6:0).
